Steelhead fishing winding down
Steelhead fishing in the Salmon area is winding down. I have put away my rods until fall. The river is off-color, several inches higher than average per date. Spring has come early this year. A clump of cottonwoods than I have watched for many years usually will show first leaves very close to the 16th of April; this year they came out a week ago. The fishing season also seems advanced compared to the calendar. This has been a strange year. Winter steelhead fishing was the best that I have seen, yet March was one of the worst seasons. Even when the river was clear enough to fish, success was erratic. In most years in the Salmon area, at this date, we would still have a few days of decent steelhead fishing. For the past week, I have rescheduled our fishermen to fall. We usually have a reasonable number of steelhead in the Salmon area by the third week of October.
