Snow pack in Salmon River basin above average at Christmas
Snow fell all day on Christmas Eve. On Christmas morning, there was 4-5 inches of fresh snow at our house–a welcome Christmas bonus. Basin-wide per cent of average for the date is about 120%. The north side of the basin apparently has more snow than the south side. The upper Middle Fork drainage seems to be a little above average The Salmon River in the Salmon area is still ice-free, which is unusual for this time of year. The mid-November cold snap put ice in the river, and created a jam that extended for several miles, but it has cut out. I have seen other winters when the coldest day of the winter occurred in November, but usually our coldest period is around New Years Day. At any rate, we are off to a good start for our summer river flow.
