17 March 2013
The Salmon River in the Salmon area has been off-color lately, but has been warming. Water clarity is better upstream from Salmon, above the Lemhi River. Yesterday son John and friend fished for the afternoon above Salmon, in water that was off but fishable, had two on but lost. Below Salmon, visibility was about 10 inched, but temperature was about 47 in early afternoon, probably warmer later. Last night was cooler, fresh snow on the ground, but river was still about 10 inches below Salmon, and 44 degrees in late morning.
Fishing has been slow this week. This is not uncommon in early March, before the river warms enough to start steelhead migrating upstream. The warmer water temperatures this past week will start fish moving, with number of fish in the Salmon area increasing very soon. Then the question becomes water clarity.
I have a 17 foot inflatable boat, with frame, for sale. Check with me for details.
